The Romanian Association of Oncology “Sfânta Ana” marks this year too, the World Day of Fight against the Breast Cancer on October 1st. In order to draw attention to the alarming increase of the breast cancer cases in Romania, but also to the real chances of survival in case of early detection, the volunteer pupils of the association distribute informative materials in Târgu-Jiu municipality. The action is assisted by the Federation of the Associations of Cancer Patients in Romania.
Breast cancer can be detected before the appearance of the clinical manifestations, the early detection ensuring maximum chances for an efficient treatment and a good prognostic. In Romania, only less than 10% of the new patients are diagnosed at an early stage.
The specialists recommend the following calendar in terms of the detection methods of the mammary neoplasm:
– Patients aged between 20-39 years: the monthly self-examination of the breasts, clinical examination of the breasts every 3 years;
– Patients aged over 40 years: the monthly self-examination of the breasts, clinical examination of the breasts every year, annual mammography.
It is recommended the periodical medical examination of the little girls starting with the first menstrual cycle, taking into consideration the endocrine modifications that came up over the last years and the number of mammary neoplasms detected in the young girls under 20.
Many persons do not know how to self-examine or they do not self-examine correctly. The patient can ask for the periodical clinical examination of the breasts if the physician fails to do this during the periodical medical examination that every insured person is entitled to do it, free of charge at the family physician. Although one in eight women risks developing a breast cancer, the disease can also strike men.
In terms of breast cancer prevention, this can be done by:
– Elimination of the risk factors and taking up a balanced lifestyle (avoiding the exaggerated consumption of alcohol, giving up smoking, taking up sport, avoiding hormone therapy, no delay in having babies, breastfeeding, avoiding rich fat diets).
– Observance of the recommendations for screening: the self-examination of the breasts, the clinical examination of the breasts, the mammary ultrasound, the mammography (recommended, if there are no suspicions, only to the women over 40 years).
